Summer Refrigerated Truck Maintenance: 3 Key Steps to Avoid Breakdowns

Summer heat can wreak havoc on refrigerated truck cooling systems, causing slow cooling, airflow issues, and even cargo spoilage. Follow these simple steps to keep your reefer unit running efficiently all season.

1. Clean Condensers & Evaporators Regularly

Clogged condensers (from cottonwood seeds, bugs, and dust) raise system pressure and reduce cooling efficiency. Use a soft brush and low-pressure water gun to clean the condenser from top to bottom until the water runs clear. For evaporators, use a water gun and brush to remove debris from the 3-6mm fins, which often get blocked by moisture and dirt.

2. Pre-Cool the Cargo Box Before Loading

Refrigerated truck units are designed to maintain temperature, not cool hot cargo. On hot days, the cargo box absorbs heat like an oven. To avoid overworking your unit:
• Open doors and air out hot air for a few minutes.
• Run the reefer unit for 5 minutes to circulate cool air before closing doors.
• Set the engine to 2000 RPM and pre-cool to your target temperature before loading.

3. Inspect the Reefer Unit Before Every Trip

Prevent breakdowns mid-route with these quick checks:
• Check belt tension and mounting brackets for loose parts (look for squealing noises).
• Touch the large suction line (low-pressure line) – it should feel cold with condensation. If it’s warm, service the unit immediately.
• Ensure no debris blocks the condenser fan and airflow paths.

By following these simple steps, you’ll avoid costly repairs, reduce fuel use, and keep your perishable cargo safe all summer long.
